How to Play Steam Games on Mac

For many years now, Mac users have been left in the dust when it comes to gaming. Microsoft users have been the ones with access to every single PC released game and have zero trouble downloading and playing any title they desire.

That has now changed; while it isn’t perfect, there are ways for Mac users to enjoy some of the best games coming out in 2021 with Nintendo. Read on to find out how you can get all your favorite Microsoft games onto your Macbook and Mac computer.

How to Play Steam Games on Mac

One way to get Steam games onto your Mac is by using Steam Link. Released earlier this year, Steam Link can be downloaded from the App Store and is used as a port of sorts to allow Mac users to download and play Microsoft games.

To access Steam Link, you will need a Mac device running macOS 10.13 or higher, a computer running Steam on Windows, and an internet connection. Simply connect the devices via ethernet, and enjoy your Steam games.

One major plus when using Steam Link, is that you are relying on your internet connection and the host system’s hardware. This means that there are no hardware requirements for your Mac laptop or computer.

Play Mac-friendly Games

Another way to play Steam games on your Mac is to play Mac-friendly games. It is no secret that Mac is far behind when it comes to gaming, and your title selection is very limited compared to PC, but there are still games you can play.

A Google search will give you all the information you need to know if a game is Mac-friendly or not. As mentioned, the titles are limited, but your research may show you that some very good games are compatible with Mac.

Shadows of the Tomb Raider, some Call of Duty titles, Civilization, all are available on Mac for you to play. If Steam doesn’t have what you need, other platforms such as Blizzard also offer Mac versions of their games.

Download Wine

If you have now exhausted all the games you want to play on Steam, or you just haven’t found what you are looking for, the next thing you can try is Wine. This is a tool that allows you to run Microsoft programs on your device.

While Wine is a great solution, it is a bit more technical than Steam Link. Wine itself won’t let you play the games you want to play; you will need an additional tool known as Porting Kit, to get games to work.

Porting Kit is a tool that does all the heavy lifting and tinkering that you would have to do manually through Wine. It will provide an installing feature and all the patches you need to get the best possible gaming experience.

If Porting Kit isn’t for you, there are some alternatives. Two of the biggest are PlayOnMac and CrossOver. The latter does cost $40, but you are getting a more complete program that you can just do more with.

What is important to remember is that none of these are perfect solutions. Some will work better than others when it comes to certain games. Going on to YouTube and reading reviews will give you a better idea of which one is best for your needs.

Emulators

If both Steam Link or Poring Kit fails, you can always go old-school and use an Emulator. An Emulator is simply a copy of a particular gaming system that can be installed on your PC or laptop.

Emulators rose to fame mainly due to the fact that you can play retro Nintendo games such as the old Pokemon titles, Super Mario, Zelda, etc. Emulators are also becoming more advanced as the years go on.

Nowadays, you can download PlayStation 1 and 2 emulators to play your favorite childhood games. While this clearly isn’t a solution to playing Microsoft games on your Mac, it is a way to expand your gaming choices if you only have access to a Mac.

As you can see, there are certainly options when it comes to playing games on your Mac. While none of them are perfect, and some require more effort than others, your options have definitely just become much more vast.
