A new "wireless device" from Google, believed to be a new Nest Thermostat, recently received FCC approval. The device, identified as "GJQ8U," features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 60GHz radar technology—similar to the Soli sensor found in the 2020 Nest Thermostat.

Unlike electronically embedded labels, this device has a physical FCC label laser-etched on the back. In the 2020 model, Google utilized Soli technology to illuminate the display upon approach and enable Home & Away Routines.

While a high-end successor to the Nest Learning Thermostat is overdue, this filing might indicate a refresh of the entry-level model. Although less likely, the device could be a smart display. However, the absence of additional sensors, like Thread for border router functionality, and typical Nest Hub designations point away from this possibility.

A smart speaker remains another possibility, but the Soli sensor's full potential shines when paired with a display.
